The Scuderia Ferrari race team will run its last three races of the Formula One season using a blend of fuel that contains biogasoline made by Virent Energy Systems, the Madison biofuel company said Tuesday.
Shell, Virent’s technology partner, has developed a blend of fuel that contains ethanol made from straw; the new blend will also include Virent’s biogas, derived from plant sugars.
Virent has 95 employees and hopes to get a commercial fuel plant operating by the end of 2015. The company’s demonstration plant converts plant sugars into fuel with the same molecular structure as gasoline.
